Northside Leadership Conference
Breaking the Chains of Poverty Career Training Program
The Pittsburgh A. Philip Randolph Institute (APRI) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide programs that extend democracy, education, and opportunity to those traditionally disenfranchised or discouraged from participation. Breaking the Chains of Poverty is an 8-week high impact, high expectation career training program designed to help participants obtain the skills necessary to gain family sustaining careers in the Building and Construction Trades, manufacturing, and emerging energy sectors.
Breaking the Chains of Poverty participants receive classroom training at the United Steelworkers building in downtown Pittsburgh. Students will also visit building and construction trade unions Joint Apprenticeship Training Centers as well as visits to manufacturing facilities, during the 8 weeks of training. Participants receive training in:
- Time Management
- Conflict Resolution
- Workplace Ethics
- Financial Literacy
- Environmental Literacy
- Resume Preparation
- Interview Preparation
- Building Trades Math and Reading Comprehension
- Computer Literacy
- Worker Rights and Trades Policy
- Human Rights
Students will obtain Technical Certifications in the following areas:
- HAZWOPER (Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response)
- NIOSH OSHA 30 hr. Construction
- Mold Remediation
- PennDOT Approved Flagger
- American Red Cross First Aid and CPR
- Roots of Success- Environmental Literacy
Program Eligibility:
- 18 Years of Age or Older
- Take the TABE assessment
- High School Diploma or GED
- Completion of a Panel Interview
- Must be Drug Free
- Registered Voter
- Must be vaccinated or willing to get vaccinated
- Must have DL or be working on getting one

OBITUARY - JOHN DESANTIS
John DeSantis, one of Pittsburgh's staunch historic preservationists, passed away this weekend at the age of 69. He was one of the founders and a longtime board member of the Northside Leadership Conference, was a member of the Allegheny West Civic Council and a defender of Allegheny Commons Park.
