Programs

The Place to Start

The Place to Start will be at the Northside Farmer’s Market located in Allegheny Commons East Park, at the corner of East Ohio Street and Cedar Avenue. This event takes place every Friday during the summer from 3PM-7PM. The Northside Leadership Conference is partnered with Allegheny General Hospital to host a Health and Wellness program. There will be activities and information for resources to live well and stay well. In the past years, we have had fitness classes, free health screenings, Walk with a Doc, healthy cooking demonstrations, giveaways and more! Our goal is to connect everyone in the Northside with the resources available to them. The program is meant to give people “The Place to Start” with living a healthy life. The Place to Start is featured at different community events such as Riverview Park Day and Heritage Day. This program is great for families of all ages.

If you and your organization are interested in participating in The Place to Start, please contact Maggie Yenchick, AGH Partnership Coordinator, at maggie@pittsburghnorthside.com.

Stranger Awareness

The Stranger Awareness Program was put in place after a violent crime was committed in September of 2000 against a Northside youth- Scott Drake. Allegheny General Hospital and the auxiliary, in conjunction with the NSLC, and two high school students worked together to create this program. The curriculum was reviewed and approved by the Psychiatry Department at AGH, whose staff are renowned experts on traumatic stress for children. Local high school students from the Pittsburgh Public Schools' Start of Success program are the ones who teach the program. These older students, many who remember participating in Stranger Awareness themselves, spend one hour a week for three weeks in the classrooms helping the younger students practice what to do when a stranger approaches them, recognize “safe” strangers, and come up with “passwords” they can use with their families. The Program concludes with a concert by David Grocer and Grover’s Gang, a nationally known children’s band who have written songs specifically for the Stranger Awareness Program.
