This year we celebrated our 32nd Annual Scholarship and Awards Dinner on June 5, 2014 at the Northside Institutional Church of God in Christ CNBE Center on North Avenue. This year’s event hosted 375 neighbors and partners with 14 Scholarships being awarded and a surprise from the Rotary Club of Pittsburgh’s Northside, a Kindle Fire HD to each scholarship winner too, 14 in total!
As most Northsiders know, we were once the separate and independent City of Allegheny. As the fourth largest City in the Commonwealth, we enjoyed all the amenities and attributes of a major City. We had beautiful parks, imposing public buildings, vibrant cultural centers, prosperous residential neighborhoods and bustling business districts. The major league baseball team – The Pittsburgh Alleghenies – played at Exposition Park and professional football began at Recreation Park.
Today we continue to enjoy the remnants of that legacy and we’ve added much to it. Some things we retained and restored, including Penn Brewery and the finest residential historic districts in the region. Some things we saved and adapted for new uses, like The New Hazlett Theater and the Heinz Lofts. Some things we lost, but got back, including the professional baseball and football stadiums. And we’ve added some new things, like world-class museums and riverfront trails.
But we never lost the strength, character and diversity of our people. Northsiders have fought for honor and been honored in the fight. Northsiders have walked the halls of power and the sidewalks of neighborhoods. Northsiders have spoken truth to power and compassion to the powerless.
Today this community has it all – the museums and attractions, the trails and bikeways, the parks and views, the neighborhoods and businesses. But more importantly, Northside has Northsiders – hard-working, fun-loving and resilient. It’s all here, but that’s because WE are all here.
