Ethnic Beginnings The
growth
of Brightwood
dates
back
to the
mid-1800s,
as the
City
of Allegheny
expanded.
Originally
settled
by Germans,
Italians,
Slovaks
and
Ukrainians,
growth
came
as workers
in the
Manchester
industrial
area
sought
and
built
homes
close
to their
workplace.
Two
large
historic
cemeteries
date
back
to the
1800s
and
include
the
graves
of industrialist
David
B. Oliver
and
Medal
of Honor
winner
Commando
Kelly.
Since
1985,
the
Brightwood
Civic
Group
has
promoted
civic
causes
and
development
as a
Community
Development
Corporation.
The
group
is responsible
for
annual
social
events
and
the
development
of a
new
32-unit
townhouse
complex.
Community Involvement and Pride The
Brightwood
Civic
Group
hosts
Springfest
and
Pumpkinfest,
two
annual
community-wide
events
that
draw
400-600
children.
Both
include
puppet
shows,
games
and
contests,
giveaways,
a play,
petting
zoo
and
pony
rides.
