Welcome to Brighton Heights As
the
name
would
suggest,
Brighton
Heights
is a
hilltop
neighborhood
on the
city's
Northside.
The
neighborhood
offers
an excellent
view
of the
city
skyline
and
the
Ohio
River
as it
winds
its
way
westward.
Once
predominantly
a German
and
Scotch-Irish
neighborhood
founded
by such
families
as the
Olivers,
the
Harbisons,
and
the
Walkers,
today
Brighton
Heights
offers
a high
degree
of ethnic
diversity.
Old Meets New Architecturally, the neighborhood is a blend of
the best features of modern and vintage homes. Large older homes and stately
churches give Brighton Heights a historical charm that contrasts nicely
with the young families and newer construction now taking place. The neighborhood
remains a tightly knit community where one is likely to find generations
of families living side by side. Many residents spend their entire lives
in this suburban landscape only 10 minutes from downtown Pittsburgh.
Conveniently Located The neighborhood is primarily residential, located
in the area between Brighton Road, which lends the community its name,
and California Avenue. Brighton Heights boasts many churches and schools,
including St. George's Ukrainian Church, famed for its perogies; St. Cryil
of Alexandria, a Catholic parish offering pre-school through 8th grade;
Brighton Road Presbyterian; and Greater Allen Chapel, a new Methodist
parish. Brighton Heights is also home to the John Morrow School, which
offers Kindergarten through 5th grade and dates back to the turn of the
century, and the Rooney Middle School. Riverview Park, which offers residents
a great venue in which to hike, picnic, play and swim, as well as the
Allegheny Observatory, borders this energetic neighborhood.
Community Involvement and Pride The Brighton Heights Citizens Federation promotes
neighborhood development and is involved in many civic projects that beautify
the area. The Federation also sponsors activities for local families including
an annual Spring Festival that includes a 5K Fun Run through Riverview
Park in May, a Halloween Parade, and a Christmas Tree Lighting during
the Holiday Season.
